Safety on the Rig
The hazards, the equipment, and the systems that keep people alive on one of the most demanding industrial worksites in the world.
Major Hazard Categories
H₂S (Hydrogen Sulfide)
Colorless gas heavier than air. At 100 ppm causes rapid incapacitation; at 500+ ppm, one breath can be fatal. High concentrations kill your sense of smell instantly.
Full H₂S Safety Guide →Fire & Explosion
Hydrocarbons from the wellbore, fuel tanks, and process equipment create constant fire risk. Hot work requires a permit and gas testing immediately before starting.
Dropped Objects
The leading cause of injury and fatality on rigs. Tools and equipment can fall from derrick height. All tools must be tethered on height work.
Stored Energy / LOTO
Hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical energy stored in rig systems. Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures must be followed for all maintenance.
PPE Requirements
Key Safety Systems
Every offshore installation has a documented Emergency Response Plan including muster point assignment, lifeboat/liferaft stations, evacuation routes, fire and gas detection with automatic shutdown, and helicopter emergency procedures. Know yours before your first shift.
Safety Deep Dives
H₂S Safety
Detection, exposure limits, escape procedures, and personal monitoring requirements for sour gas.
